Why is it assumed that the original engine didn't turn the same way the Corvair does?
The bell housing source was my first thought also.

Two options I can think of:
- Reverse the engine rotation.  There are/were reverse grind Corvair
camshafts available for VW engine transplants.
- Run the machine in reverse.  It may have forward/reverse gearing similar
to a lot of construction equipment.

The question that struck me was where did the bell housing come from?
