All,
This week end I did a job on a 65 automatic customer car that I had not done
before. That was replace the heater control cable. That's the long one in
the tunnel. I have done this and all the other heater repairs on other
Corvairs but with the engine out of the car. Actually, it went well. I was
able to get the retainer off the heater end of the cable (it was broken
under the dash) with my fingers and the 1/4" clamp screw was accessible with
a small ratchet and socket. It was by feel as I could not see it but it came
out easy.
Also replaced the heater hose on both sides. The clamp at the heater end was
easily twisted and broken due to rust which is what I hoped would happen.
All the clamps were replaced with the all stainless worm gear type. This car
had all the under body rust a Corvair gets from sitting for long periods in
a dirt floor garage. The tunnel pans had never been removed. It really was a
Little Old Lady car that was sold when she was too old to drive it anymore.
The guy was real happy to have heat and defrost now that the weather is
changing. I was happy to have a paying customer who doesn't quibble! After
his having dealt with other "mechanics" before he found me he thinks I a
Corvair expert!
