"With all due respect, Jeff's assertion about
manufacturers specially naming hardtop body styles is
not entirely accurate. The Chevrolet Bel Air model
debuted in 1953, with two-door and four-door sedans
(replete with B pillar) as well as a two-door hardtop
and a convertible. The Ford Crown Victoria, first out
in the 1955 model year, was a separate trim level
within the Fairlane model group, which also included a
non-Crown two-door hardtop..."
In 1950, Chevrolet introduced their first 2-door
hardtop, and it was named the Bel-Air. Ford followed
in 1951 with the Victoria, their first 2-door hardtop.
These models had no sedan versions at the time, and
were considered "top-of-the-line" for both
manufacturers. As I said, these names would later go
on to indicate entire model lines, including sedans.
But as they were FIRST introduced to the public, they
were strictly 2-door hardtops.
