BSCC- Harmonic Balancer/Engine Mount

When I rebuilt my engine the rubber in the harmonic balancer looked ok
because it was grimy with grease. But when I cleaned it up, I found it was
falling apart. I sent in the core for a rebuilt. Good idea.

Lionel is right. Don't wait. I have seen plenty of those come apart and cut
right into the filter. You won't know your in trouble until the oil
pressure light comes on and by then it will be too late - scored bearings
and/or seized engine - not good.

The problem with your harmonic balancer is that when it comes apart it will
destroy the oil filter and if you are tooling down the road good by engine.

Jay,....What you see is aged rubber.Rubber has a shelf life of about 7
yrs.,and it will harden and crack. It basically looses it's softness, and may
distort a little.Out of the 28 Corvair's that I have had over the years,I
have never replaced any of these parts, due to failure.Save the money.Tires
are a different story. They will seperate due to aging, and fly apart. My
personal opinion is to drive as is,and not worry about these
items, especially the balancer.I would recheck, and look for vibration when
engine running. Both items mentioned are designed to absorb
vibration.Hopefully, other members send along input.I have been a auto tech
my entire career.Let see what the arm chair expert's have to say. Pete

I am begining to think about replacing the balancer and the engine mount on
my '67 110.

The rubber on the mount is dry, cracked and it is slightly dipped in the
center.

The rubber is cracked on the balancer.

I have attached pictures of the items.

Are there any other signs I should be looking for?

Does it make sense to replace both of these items at the same time?

Just looking for some input, as both items are expensive.

Thank you in advance -
