While there is SOME truth to this story, it is
somewhat overblown. Check out

Basically, what they say is it IS possible to get a
key by this method but highly unlikely due to the cost
of reproducing a key, the amount of trouble needed to
go through to obtain the VIN and then get the key,
etc. If a thief wants your car, they'll just take the
darn thing a whole lot quicker and by simpler (to
them!) means...say ripping out the ignition and hot
wiring it.

Plus, in some areas, it is illegal to obscure the VIN
and most legalities actually encourage having the VIN
added to other areas of the car to prevent or
discourage theft...
