I'll echo the other respondents - by the time you pull the glass, you may as well just replace the seal.  If the car will need rust repair, I think the "quick fix" would be clean off the old seal, some of the Rustoleum rust converter, touch up with a spray can, then use new sealing tape.  At our house that's more like a weekend project, but it'll last until he gets "a Round Tuit".
