Richard, I didn't see where you specified the year and model of the car. In the late-1965 and 1966 columns, there is a snap ring that must be pulled out, which will release the switch.
I went crazy trying to remove mine until a call to Seth Emerson got me back on track. It's possible that this design is unique since my 69 Monza column didn't have the snap ring, and the mid-65 and 66 column had a universal joint that Chevy put there for improved safety in a collision.
So if your car was built later in the 1965 model year, or is a 1966, you'll find the snap ring up in the coupler assembly right at the firewall on the OUTSIDE of the car (not in the interior).
The 1965 Shop Manual doesn't mention anything about a snap switch, so it's possible that older Corvairs didn't have them.
