<VV> Changing C878 Power Glide gear shift o-ring. How to get the rod off?

Hi, my transmission leaks possibly at the Clarks part C878 o-ring where the
shift rod enters the transmission. I have a new C878 and I am trying to
change it. I have the pan off and am trying to see how to slide the rod out
but right now it isn't obvious. See picture.  It seems to resist on the
right side of the 'clip' that is on the ribbed rod. I don't want to damage
this for obvious reasons. Is there a right way to do this?
