<VV> The Damm starter final?

   If I did not see it, I would not believe it !! First all was hooked up with the + an old factory cable to the starter and - an old factory cable directly to the engine, used the factory yellow/purple starter wiring to the solenoid.     During the comp check, the starter sounded exactly as it should, fast and powerful. I did a comp check. 200 psi on the 2,4,6  and  190 psi on the  1,2,3. Correct 44F plugs reinstalled and torqued to 18 psi.
 On a whim, I activated the starter..........the darn thing spun through the comp strokes for about 10 seconds. Not a single bad sound. Waited 30 seconds and did it again.  Sounded just like It should. Tried it again, still good.
 Tomorrow I'll test it again and remove the spare transaxle from the bell housing.
 I have to thank all who suggested something, most of which I either tried already or did incorporate. I did paint the ring gear and the starter gear. It showed fine engagement and even used an old starter with worn gear for one test. A few pics for reference.
Unfortunately I do not have an answer. Possible high resistance or poor contacts with the old cables? I did need a new starter and TQ though.
