Actually, I do remember going to see a 140 Corsa Convertible many, many years ago (over 40 years ago) in New York City. It actually DID have a THREE speed manual trans which was a surprise to me but was verified since there were only 3 speeds forward. The owner wasn't sure if he REALLY wanted to sell it even though I would have bought it and converted it to 4 speed since the car was in BEAUTIFUL shape. But he never followed through and I never bought it. So there was at least ONE Corsa that actually came from the factory with a 3 speed trans.

Beside the undesirability factor, I imagine that another reason for a 3
speed being rare is that it would cause similar problems (but maybe not quite
as severe) paired with a turbo as a 2 speed automatic would have caused.
Specifically, too much RPM drop between gears. I understand that no
factory turbo motors were paired with 2 speed automatics for this reason. I
suppose the 3 speed would work OK with the 140 Corsa but were any 3 speed
Spyders or turbo Corsas available from the factory? If so, any feedback as to
performance? Was the 3 speed tranny/turbo combination one of the
"standards" that GM disallowed at the factory whether you wanted it or not?

Yes, I always thought it was a bit perverse not to have the 4-speed as the
standard transmission on Corsa and Spyder, but like the MONO version of
the "Sgt Pepper" LP, it is extremely rare because almost no one bought one!
