You are probably thinking of the Gama Goat.  The original GG prototype had a 
Corvair engine.  The production version had a GM 3-53 Diesel engine.  By the 
'60s, the military was going Diesel on everything they could.

  The thinking at the time was the government wasn't all that happy with the 
passenger car Corvair engine so they elected to go with the six wheel … Ah …
