I shudder every time I build a motor (especially for someone else) that
something like that might bite me. So far , I am doing OK. That issue sounds a
lot like valve seals not installed , or on the wrong valves?
This is assuming a lot of other things have been checked , compression ,
maybe a leakdown test? (airing up each cylinder , one at a time) Any signs
of oil on the plugs? only oil issue I had a few years ago was
apparently caused by a local machine shop HONING cylinders out to .020 , instead of
boring them. I fixed it with a set of Clarks cylinders to match the
pistons . Even though I could not "see" the problem.
My worst funny one was noises caused by pistons marked .030 in new
cylinders (from out west somewhere) that were really .020. I now measure
everything I buy , after all the fun I had because I trusted the markings on the
parts. ALL 6 were wrong.
