Do you have "power" at the positive side of the coil with the key on? If yes, do you have an on/off signal at the negative side while cranking the engine? (I like to check both with my 12 volt test light). If yes, do you have spark available at the spark plug? I like to check using an old spark plug hooked up to one of the 6 wires. If yes, get cylinder #1 on TDC of the compression stroke and then see where the rotor is pointing. It should be just before #1 on the cap. If yes to all of these questions it will run if you have gas and compression. If yes to all of these AND the distributor is 180 off it will backfire/cough/ do something besides just crank.

>Hi - I am trying to start my LM 110 HP engine that last ran in 2006 due to a long resto projects. Only thing apart on the engine was the rocker arms to replace the push rod tubes seals.  I set the valve adjustment with directions from local corvair guys and the shop manual. Compress is fine.

>It cranks but does not seen to want to catch. How do I check to see if I have the distributor clocked correctly, couldn't it be off 180 degrees? I have set the dist at the # 1 clyinder with the timing marks lined up.

>I see gas squart into the carb, at least on one, so I think we're getting fuel ok....any ideas to check? The instrument cluster is not installed but I don;'t believe this matters.
