I've seen magnets in the auto trans pans of my 89 Aerostar and my 03 Regal.
At first fluid change they had some fuzz on them, less afterward.
I think you'd want a place where the fuzz could build up without the 
fluid swooshing lumps of it into the inlet.
For that reason I'm not sure about the oil filter magnet.

Gas tank?
