Way back when, on early EFI systems, like in the 80's (and maybe later) there was a relay that was there to do what you, John, said it was supposed to do. They had a lot of problems with it. And with the rest of the system. I forgot th e name of the relay circuit .
I don't know how th ey do it now, or if th ey even burn it off, but apparently, fr o m what the tech said, if one scans the system, he will see degradation when the sensors are "dirty".

These th ings used to have a b urn off mode, whenever the engine was turned off, the wire would glow orange hot for several seconds to get rid of contamination. Not sure they st ill do that, but it was pretty much universal at one time.

There are issues which don't apply to carb engines, but to modern engines using
a MAF sensor.
"The bigger concern is that the air filter oil contaminates the "hot" wire on
the MAF sensor and leads to inaccurate air flow calculation. Fuel trims
compensate until they reach their max adapt limits. "
