I know that many probably can do it but removing just the engine gives me
the heebie-jeebies. Many Corvair mechanics I know feel the same way and
would refuse remove just the engine. What's the problem? Just take out the
entire power train and separate the engine and transaxle on the floor. It
is probably easier to get it back together when it's out of the car.

Colonel, If you want to do it correctly, you know the answer. If you want
to risk the outcome, you know the answer. If you have the engine already
out, removing the transaxle is pretty darn quick and easy to remove and then
split apart. I like doing things properly. I like driving my Corvairs long
distance. My vote is do it correctly. Tell us your decision.

news--closer inspection as I was putting on throw out bearing showed a crack in the
snout. It looks like a piece could fall out if I touched it, Crack extends
7/16 of an inch from end of snout. Any fixes? JB weld? Or am I faced
with dropping the trans axle and having a new snout installed? I'm afraid o f
the answers!
