Bill,
Do you have some special PVC pipe? All of it I've ever had was extremely flame resistant. Put a torch on a piece of PVC pipe sometime and see what happens. Or is the regular stuff that people use for drains not really PVC?
Before someone corrects me I'm not saying it can't burn, just that it isn't likely in an engine compartment environment.

If'n y'all gots poly vinyl chloride pipe in your engine compartment, get rid of it! (except as carb air cleaner extensions, but it is still a fire hazard).
And, I've previously posted (more than once) about the lack of actual Positive Crankcase Ventilation in a stock Corvair -- there is no fresh air inlet to the crankcase to create the "positive ventilation".
