Mike, I write about this all the time. There is likely a serious problem  
with your powerglide fluid.
Here is the story.
 
Starting with the 1960 model, Chevrolet specified that the PG fluid NEVER  
had to be changed. Then, suddenly in 1965 they must have been overwhelmed  
with field complaints, Chevrolet CHANGED their recommendation from never, to  
every 12 months (ie, change what is in the oil pan). 12 months for normal  
service and EVERY 6 months for severe service. Six months!!!!!
 
So Mike, if you possibly have any of the old stuff in your PG, get it  
changed ASAP.
