Bob,
As Joel has clarified we are not talking about changing the fluid but just what you said--dropping the pan (or draining the pan with an added drain plug) and replenishing the pan fluid.

Yes, but also see page 0-8 of the same 1965 Shop Manual that says EVERY 12,000
MILES (OR MORE FREQUENTLY FOR SEVERE SERVICE) to remove the oil from the
transmission sump and add two quarts of fresh fluid.
Same as the then current
Chev Service Bulletins.

I believe those were generic bulletins for all Chevrolets--and not sent to owners or included in subsequent manuals. If they were specific to Corvairs I'd appreciate seeing a facsimile. I've dropped the pans on mine and changed the fluid and cleaned screens at about 50K in the past with one transmission going to almost 200K before the engine failed and I stopped using it.
How often do you change your fluid?
