<VV> hot motor oil

Ken, take a look at the msds sheets for the oils in question. The
corvair engine was designed for oil at a viscosity of 9.3 to 12.5 cSt
at 100 degrees C , or 212 degrees F Per Richard widmans article. It is
a standard test. So, look for oils in that range, but stick to the
higher cSt end. Oils loose their ability to hold viscosity over time.
True synthetics are less prone to this so can do a better job for
longer change intervals.
People have used full synthetic up to 18 cSt at 100 degrees c, however,
which is the Mobil 1 15w50 oil. Maybe because it is more slippery? Mark

The Mobil 1 I used was 10w40 as all my Covair oils are and one of the
questions was what kind of viscosity will we see when we compare a
Mobil 1 oil vs a dino oil when the Corvair engine is at running temp.
Has anyone ever checked to see which might be thinner when drained
from a hot engine. By the way that engine was taken out and replace
by the correct designated engine.
