IF I use used push rods , I always run then thru my carburetor cleaner ,
and rinse them with water from a pressure nozzle. . I always blow them dry
and wipe them., and roll them on a chunk of glass to make sure they are not
bent. I have even found a slightly out of true new pushrod..Also look at the
ends for any signs of gaulling or roughness. they should be very smooth.
Same basic procedure with used rockers , no roughness at the ball surface ,
no wear from valve stem , and pushrod socket smooth. I have resurfaced a
few where the valve stem rides with a bench belt sander , if they are not
too worn. New rockers and pushrods are not that expensive , so new with
grooved balls is the best way. I suppose even better would be the mated parts. I
have never had trouble using grooved balls on good used rockers.
If I save rockers , I use bag ties , or wire ties to keep mated parts
together. Then I check them later , and toss bad ones. I usually use new ones
on motors not for myself.
