Stuttgart, Arkansas, that is. I received my copy of the April 2012 SCCA
monthly magazine "Sports Car". And there was a picture of a Corvair on the
cover, an early convertible. A very tiny picture, but a full picture. Inside
the magazine is a story on the "Ghost Tracks" of the Southeast. Those are
the road racing tracks that were built, raced on and then, for some reason
(usually financial) closed and abandoned over the years. The author, Peter
Hylton, attempts to visit the locations and sometimes has pictures of what
is left of a specific corner or straightaway. The small photo of the Corvair
was pulled out of a much larger photo in the story. It shows the Corvair
convertible as the pace-car for the big Grand Prairie Sports Car race in
about 1963 or 64 at the Stuttgart Airport track. The Corvair even has the
pace-car banners on the doors. Like in that photo from the Nassau races that
showed up last week, the sporty Corvair really stands out in this shot. - Seth
