I figured anyone who knows anything about cars would assume that "American"
was implied, since there are dozens of European "sporty" cars that are true
"sports" cars (2-seaters) before the Corvair.

The important point that gets missed is that, among ALL the other cars,
Corvettes, T-Birds, MGs and Deusenberg SJ "Torpedo" Phaetons, most were
designed for the expensive sports car market.

The Corvair targeted the "economy" market, and took the "sports" car world
by surprise, first because it handled like a sports car, but was NOT
supposed to be a "sports" car, and second because it had a (REAL) back set!

What else did the Corvair do first, especially in its bracket ?

I agree on all these points.  I'm aware the T-bird was a poor performer and
expensive, the Corvette was a good performer but expensive, tons of foreign
cars were both sporty and affordable....

My point was simply that the Corvair wasn't the "first sporty car"...
anybody could shoot that statement full of holes.  My concern is that if we
try to counter all the horrible falsehoods about Corvairs with statements
that can quickly be proved incorrect we are not helping anybody.

I certainly don't mean any offense to anyone, all of us make mistakes... I'm
REALLY good at it myself!

The sporty car with a back seat was certainly significant, but I don't guess
it was the first in the world... I suppose it was the first in the US =)
