RE: loose oil filter plate. (shot in dark?)
i just recently took a motor way apart searching for a strange noise , like
cam gear type noise. my findings were ( i think!!) oil filter plate spun
shutting off most oil flow thru filter , causing oil to flow thru bypass
valves in the housing. it showed good oil pressure on a gauge. the oil pump
must have had to work very hard. it caused the distrib gear to wear where it
is driven from the cam. i replaced the oil pump gears , distrib gear ,
camshaft , and of course the oil filter. this motor had about 4000 miles on it
when i removed it for transmission problems , and decided to go after the
noise. the filter was changed at @1000 miles. i doubt both had the same
troubles.
anyhow , make sure you do look at that plate and do NOT turn the filter
(just the bolt!) when installing the filter.
i checked 3 brands of filters i have here in stock , and 2 will turn with
no effort. i am not sure what brand was on that motor , i paint my filters a
semi gloss black before installing them.
end of story is , that motor has no noises now..still test running on the
bench for now. 140pg crank,2 carb 110hp heads , 9891 cam now.
