Does anyone  know of any  Corvair engine and/or drive train issues with the
engine stuck  out  there with no visible means of support?

A great question, James. i have  often wondered about that myself.

That kind of installation falls into the "Git ur done" category.   Engine 
cooling would also appear to be an issue.
