<VV> clutch pedal bushings

According to the 65 shop manual, you should be able to remove the clutch and
brake pedals and the cross-shaft without dropping the entire sub assembly.
I don't see how that's possible with the heater and defrost duct in place.
Any helpful advice would be appreciated.  The car in question is a 66 coupe
with factory air conditioning.
