I think the trick would be making sure that the inserts are tight enough so that the stud threads through the first one an into the bottom one. 
Dennis mentioned die-cutting the threads before threading into an insert. The head studs are designed to thread into the stock aluminum upper
holes and kind-of "gall" their way to the bottom, forming the aluminum into shape. The inserts are hard enough that they will have none of that!
Die cutting the outside threads will allow them to enter the inserts more easily. To retain them, depending on your confidence in your work,
 you could use a Loctite (thread locking/sealing) compound at the final install.

You would never want to try only one short one.  Two works some times and
ometimes it doesn't.  Be sure to run a 3/8-18 die over the interference fit
hreads on the block end of the studs before trying to screw it into a
elicoil or any other insert.

If the Helicoils are short why couldn't you use 2 to make the full length of
he threaded hole? Would that be a KISSolution?
