That's exactly why I run premium... to prevent pinging, prevent
having to retard timing and run hot, prevent losing out on fuel
mileage, prevent me having to pull a head to replace a knocked out
valve seat.
Frank's right... the money saved by backing off timing to prevent
pinging isn't as much as what you lose from the reduced mileage. I
have figures on the log books from Back When, between playing with
timing and using premium in a 110. There's a noticeable drop in
mileage when you back off the timing to keep things from pinging and
in summer heat that doesn't always work in the first place and you
still lose fuel mileage.
