<VV> "Ask not what CORSA...."

Thoughts from a lurker;
This continuing discussion and thread re: 100% CORSA membership for
local chapter members has been regurgitated a number of times in my
limited (6 years) involvement with Corvairs, CORSA and VV itself. Too
often the subject arises as to what has the organization done for me,
what benefit do I get out of being a dues paying member. That question
has been answered numerous times with illustrations of what we would NOT
have without CORSA. More disturbing to me is the sense that the
individual MUST see some personal reward or why join. There was a time
when being part of something for the greater good (in our case the
preservation of the Corvair) was enough to warrant participation. That
still holds true when it comes to charity and volunteering in the US
and Canada (both in the top 4 worldwide) according to a recent survey.
I happen to be a part of Western Canada Corsa which is spread across
1000 miles and local activities are for me, difficult or impossible to
attend. I envy those who are fortunate enough to have other
enthusiasts, a really local chapter and knowledgeable mechanics nearby
who can assist and encourage them as they pursue their hobby.
Admittedly, CORSA and VV are my resource for information and expertise
and so serve my isolated need. Can't help but believe that there are
many Corvair owners in the same situation. Mark's comment about the
'contacts' we have because of CORSA is certainly a great personal
benefit to us all. Cost...not an honest issue for the vast majority of us.
Being 'told what to do'? It happens everyday when we drive down the
street, pay a bill or file our Income Tax. Bottom line: CORSA is one
element, perhaps the most important one, in the continuing movement to
preserve and protect the heritage and longevity of our cars. That's
reason enough.

Bill Kronen
P.S. A 1963 Studebaker Hawk recently found a home in my garage. To join
the nearest local chapter meant joining the national, Studebaker Drivers
Club, a great international organization. For me, the only way to go.
