I remember, ages ago, looking inside a Subaru 3 speed automatic. The first thing that struck me was it had the same Ravigneaux gearing of a Powerglide! By adding an extra clutch pack, they got an extra speed out of the same number of gears. Long and short pinions, two sun gears, one annulus gear, and they got three speeds! I believe the extra gear came from locking the ring gear and clutching in the other sun gear to the input shaft. Now, if someone wanted to explore that option... <G>

I remember the Communique article about the car. Not to say that I remember
all the facts :)
I believe they attempted to put a turbo engine in the car, with the
Powerglide (kind of unusual, right there). But they could not keep it from
pinging when it shifted to drive. That's when they tried making the 3-speed
automatic. It still didn't keep it from pinging, so I think it got a
normally aspirated engine anyway.
