Had an opportunity to drop in on the Ultravan National Rally near here earlier this week. There were 7 or 8 Ultra's there. I had never seen one before. They really are quite a marvel. We were given an in depth tour of #388 by their gracious owners. Learned there were 400 made, they are not numbered 1-400, but rather a series of numbers here and there. The difference in the rivets of an Ultra and an Airstream (apparently the Airstream guys covet the Ultra's aircraft rivets). They will fit through a McDonald's drive thru, and can turn around in a space no longer than their own length. They were made to be maneuverable in San Francisco, they were all made to order (including the desired length). This particular Ultra was delivered new to a Dr. in Charlotte, NC in 1968. They are almost completely aluminum with the exception of some fiberglass to achieve the desired shape and therefore many have survived. Lot's of other interesting fun facts as well. Moral of the story, they are well worth a drive to go see one if you have the chance.
