Hi Mike, Warm the rubber boot up in very warm water, use Vaseline or 
gear lube on the boot and the tube/brace, and
try your best to "gently" work the boot over the assembly. Knowing 
you, you are probably using a NOS part which may
prove more problematic than a "repro" as the NOS has deteriorated 
over the 40+ years of existence and will be more prone
to splitting or tearing. Praying or cursing or both are optional 
assist mechanisms and coping tools. <GGG>
