Leave them off until the doors get chipped then put them on to cover the
chips :o). If they are really stainless, they have to scratch the paint to
stay on.

What are you trying to accomplish with the guards? If you just want to
protect the door edge, buy some plastic guards that won't scratch the paint.
Personally, I think the guards look worse than a few chips that can be
repaired with touch-up paint.
