<VV> Installing door guards

I'm trying to think of a good way to put on the stainless steel door  
edge guards on my '65.  It was newly repainted in October, and I  
don't want to scratch the paint on the edges of the doors if at all  
possible.  Does anyone have suggestions as to how they can be  
attached without damaging the paint underneath?
