Actually it there is more retaining the arm than just the close slip fit.  Look closely at the bottom of the wiper arm ... there is a sort of forked shaped part that retracts as the wiper arm is lifted away from the glass.  With the wiper on the glass that fork slides under the transmission shaft hub and makes the arm secure.
