Matt: I believe there was virtaully no change in the
procedures on the Fisher Body side from 1968 to 1969.
The cars were virtually the same, with some minor
exceptions, such as the amber front side markers, key
locks, and the head rests which were now standard.
The front seats were now 2 inches wider than '68 and
the rearview mirror was 2 inches wider as well. Other
(minor) changes to the 69s were mechanical, including
a revised clutch cable and upgraded brake
hoses/mountings (this work would have been done on the
Chevy side of WRN?). Therefore there is no reason to
conclude that '69 body assembly was any different from
'68.
So in conclusion, I believe Fisher's Corvair body
build procedures remained the same throughout the
68-69 model runs without change until the end, while
the Chevy side of the shop had drastic procedural
changes from November '68 through May '69, and minor
changes from August through November '68.
In case anyone was wondering, one complete body was
produced which never made the Covair assembly line.
It exists today exactly as shipped from Fisher Body,
is a Garnet Red Monza coupe, and is in private hands.
This would be a good topic for Dave Newell and Mark
Ellis, our resident '69 mavens, to confirm.
