Same here. If you use the CORRECT mechanical fuel pump you can
expect it to last decades. The Vairs here ALL have mechanical pumps
and there's been no issues at all outside one pump about 8 years ago
which had the bogus non-fiber reinforced rubber diaphragms which
failed within a week if its having been purchased. THAT pump
slipped by me. Honest vendor replaced it with the correct material
pump which has run on and on ever since, never a problem.
Likewise the pump that's on the engine in my '60 4-door. That pump
is almost 41 years old and still works fine.
If you use the correct mechanical pump, there will be no
problems. Unfortunately there are still a few of those bogus pumps
floating around, and they tend fail quickly.
Don't blame the design for the failures. Make sure the mechanical
pump you put on the engine is the right one, and *then* make sure you
follow the standard instructions (snug the screws after a few days
running) on adjustments after you install it. There's no reason to
assume that a correct mechanical pump is inferior to the electric
pumps... and in fact in many cases it's the electric pumps that can
be troublemakers, not the mechanical pumps.
...whoever it was that decided to use non-reinforced rubber gasket
sheet as diaphragm material in fuel pumps needs to be hunted down and
shot on sight, and it wasn't just 'Vair pumps that got this bogus
diaphragm material either.
