Ok Gents here it is:
I took the lower shrouds off of the Corsa today and went driving for a
spell. It turns out that it is hard to duplicate the pinging just by myself with
the shrouds off. However, I checked the timing at idle once she was warmed
up. It showed 8 degrees at idle. As I throttled it up it mechanically
advanced up to a max of about the mid 20's. Then with the vacuum reinstalled it
goes more than that......... into the unknown zone. I have a rudimentary
timing light so that's the best I can do right now. I went ahead and backed her
down 2 degrees and the idle speed dropped a bit. I test drove and found no
problems except a lack of power when the hammers are all the way down and the
speed gets beyond 60 or so. By the way, the harmonic balancer is still
intact. I have a new Billet Clarks version. Anybody think changing is a good
idea? The highest temp I saw on an 83 degree New England day was barely 300
degrees on a long hill climb. And.....to all those Corsa stink mongers out
there, taking the lower shrouds off really cut back on the post drive stink. I
would guess that the engine is quite a bit cooler and doesn't boil off as much
fuel to cause the stink. No guarantees with that advice. I will probably
change the Dbtr springs and check the accuracy of the vacuum advance in the
near future. I'll let you know how it goes.
Regards,
Chris Hand
