<VV> question about manual shifter / shift pattern on early FC

Think of a standard shift pattern as an upside-down pendulum, with the base
as the pivot point. 1st to 2nd has the head of the shifter on the same
horizontal plane.

On the early FC shifter that plane is not horizontal. 1st is lower, and
you're pulling back and up to get to 2nd. The design of the early shifter
keeps it close at hand. Although the conveluted linkage allows for quite a
bit of slop. The later "improved" shifter requires leaning forward to reach
the shifter and can be hard on the back. (Unless you've got the long arms of
a gorilla)

Regards,
Joel

Subject: <VV> question about manual shifter / shift pattern on early FC

A Newbie question, but I have to ask:

The FC primer reads: "the manual shifter on the early FCs is a little
unusual" and that "it is mounted on a vertical panel under the front bench
seat and is operated with a different motion (up-down instead of
forward-back) than is common".

What does this mean? Can someone describe the shift pattern and shift lever
motion?

Thanks,

- Steve
