The condenser (capacitor) in the distributor is used to reduce the inductive
voltage kick across the points. In a pinch, (like if the condenser shorts
out),you can run the engine without it, but it causes excessive arcing and
metal transfer on the point contacts and will lead to early points failure.
The capacitor on the positive side of the coil is used to reduce electrical
noise, for the radio.
