also check all of the upper head studs.  one may have traveled in far  enough 
to touch a rod. that makes a nasty noise that can be felt. if that is the  
case also put a magnetic drain plug in to get the filings out.  i also  
magnetize the dipstick to see anything metal as it crops up.
is there any shine in the oil when you check it? like metalflakes?   did you 
check oil pressure with a test gauge ? (oil pickup may be loose or bent  up 
during assembly)  i have almost seen it all over the  years....almost.
