It's always been awkward to me to use the spin-the-pushrod method.  You're
lying on your back, twisted around trying to feel something subtle with oily
fingers.  Maybe I'm just clumsy.  Maybe I have wooden fingers - I can turn
pushrods when they're way too tight.

A piece of paper between the valve and the rocker makes a good feeler gauge
and is not as smooth as a real one so it's more sensitive.  It's pretty easy
to tell when things close up by trying to slide the paper around.  A quarter
turn on the nut changes the clearance about .020, so things aren't all that
critical anyway - you can be off a few thousandths.

Frankly, I've never found this to be a difficult adjustment.  I adjust cold.
If I ever have one ticking after I drive it a little, I suppose I'll
readjust it running- never had to.
