thing was on very tight and I didn't want to apply too much presure to the

Robert - The only key in the balancer just keeps it from rotating, and
shouldn't restrict it from pulling off, once the retainer and washer are removed.
There is a special tool that allows "easy" removal of the balancer with the
engine fully in place on the car. I have used a glorified steering wheel
puller before. You use a plate that bolts on to the two holes in the center part
of the balancer, You replace the retainer bolt you removed (Leave the thick
washer OFF) and let the plate contact that center bolt as you tighten the two
outer bolts. Once the plate tightens up against the top of the retainer bolt,
it will pull the balancer off. Once the plate bolts have tightened down
against the pulley, just back them off about 1/8th inch, back the center bolt out
until it touches the plate and crank the outer bolts down again. Alternating
back and forth will pull off the balancer, but it is pretty tight in there.
