I had the same trouble in my '64 Coupe. Turns out the dash was rusty
and generally grey and yuckey looking..making for a bad ground for the
light sockets.  I got back there with a small piece of sandpaper and
shined things up around where the sockets plug in, and the quantity of
light increased considerably.  Keep in mind, even the best Corvair dash
lights that I've ever seen are not as bright as a modern day dash.  But
this made a huge difference.
