Mike,

Interesting solution and diagnosis of the mystery.  My vote was for 
case stud, but then I'm not often right.  That's why I just "lurk".

This is sort of a spin off of this thread. I too have a booger-ed spark 
plug hole.  66/180 Turbo,  Helicoil by a PO, failed.  Hole is now too 
large for the  'Time" "Big-sert" '.
What is the proper fix? Does a machine shop repair compare in 
durability with replacing the head? and will the fact that it is a 
"turbo" be a consideration in the ultimate fix.
