I have the dubious honor of correcting someone elses mistake. the engine is a 65 140, bore 030 heads by ray sedeman,(milled gasketsurfaces. new valves oversize seats, new springs retainers, rockers, pushrods. and the deep dimple lifters. new 3872304 cam with locked gear. Dale dist , damper, and flywheel. I mentored the gentleman who assembled this engine over about 4 years or so. the main problem is a very noisy valve train like I've never heard before. when he first assembled the engine he collapsed the lifters and bound it up I went over and walked him through the adjustment procedure and cautioned him that he or I would have to adjust the lifters hot and running so as to be sure of the proper clearances. the engind never did run as well as it shoul have. the car is now owened by a family member and I have spent a lot of time trying to solve the problems.( note oil pressure is 40-45 at operating temp.) the noise in the valv train was so bad you had nop idea if o when you had a proper adjustment. however today I decided to start at square one and check for collapsed lifters. apon removing the valve cover and as I was removing the rocker arms on # 5 I noticed somthing abnormal all of the pushrod tubes are in backwards!!! when they are reversed like this they are barely in the bores in the head. my theory is that the lifters were hitting the side of the pushrod tube and this is where the noise is coming from also this would cause the impacting that i felt when trying t locate the noise on each rocker assb. has anyone else run into this problem?? The two lifters have a few nicks and the pushrod tubes appear to have been bumped on one side ( remember the tubes are at an angle compaired to the lifter).
thanks in advance for your help
