I found that you ran out of first gear pretty quickly already. An even lower first wouldn't have been that useful - especially on a turbo where you want to stay in a single gear with the engine under load as long as possible, to get that oversized turbo spinning.....

Wouldn't combining the 3.27's with a '61FC tranny and it's stump puller
first gear be a good solution as well?

I had 3.27 in my '63 Spyder coupe (145ci). No problems whatsoever and decent
highway mileage was a bonus (28mpg Canadian).
