<VV> Loose fuel lines?

At least once or twice a year, I have to tighten the
large nut on the fuel filters, right where the fuel
line attaches.  Do these things just get "loose" over
time?  I don't want to over-tighten the nut, for fear
I'll strip and/or break it.  I replaced the filters a
couple years ago, so the gaskets are relatively new
(or do they need to be replaced on an annual basis?). 
Any thoughts on how to remedy this?  I'm tired of
getting that tell-tale odor of raw, leaking fuel
wafting into the car, then wondering if I can make it
home before the car catches fire.....  Jeff Clark
