Hello, all,
I had intended to lurk on the list for a while longer before
making a first post, but couldn't resist this one.
Yes, Dexron and DOT-3 or -4 are both hydraulic fluids. They have
many properties which are identical, but some that are different. Many
of the experimental aircraft types use Dexron in their A/C brake
systems instead of the insanely expensive Mil-Spec stuff that must be
used in the brake systems of certificated aircraft. Except for a few
additives, they are almost identical, and both are compatible with all
the materials of seals, hoses, etc. I plan to use Dexron in the brake
system of the airplane I'm building. I'm not, however, ready to use it
in a car. I don't know that the seals and stuff are compatible. I'm
certain that everything will work fine with DOT-4. DOT-4 isn't that
much more expensive. I don't want to trust my life to a possible
savings of less than $10 on something that's unproven. It's risky to
try to second-guess the GM engineers.
As they say, your mileage may vary, and this advice is worth what
you paid for it.
