Geoff,
If you can feel the wear, it's already too late to save them.  Get a  new set 
of gears or a replacement differential.  If you get a replacement  
differential, make sure it is a rebuilt one with new seals or do it  yourself.  Use 
caution with the "O" ring seal at the torque converter  stator shaft as it is very 
difficult to get it in without damaging it and there  is no way to check it 
without disassembling it again.
